Welcome and 93!

The Free Gnostic Assembly of Sophia is a local temple of the Ecclesia Gnostica Universalis. We are a body local to New Orleans and believe that every person contains Gnosis, or spiritual knowledge, within themselves. It is our duty to look within ourselves using meditation and other disciplines to discover this hidden knowledge. We exist as a body to help you help yourself. We provide fellowship and guidance to each other as we travel along our own personal routes to self-discovery.

Spiritual knowledge isn’t found in a book. It’s not found in religious dogma. Just as the quote implies for beauty: “You can search the world over for beauty, but unless you carry it within yourself, you will find it not”, the same goes for gnosis. If you recognize gnosis in an external source, it is because you recognize it within yourself. Because of this, the Free Gnostic Assembly of Sophia does not try to burden you with dogma. We don’t try to burden you with rules and regulations. We simply exist as your companions along your road to self-discovery.

The Meaning of Our Name

The “Free” in our name refers to a few different things:

1. You are a man or woman of legal age, thus “free” to make your own decisions in life and to follow your own path.
2. You are not bound by your association with us. We do not heap useless rules upon you. We do not give you mountains of dogma to wade through. It is your path.
3. You associate with us of your own choice. There is no guilt involved. We do not tell you that you are going to hell if you do not associate with us. It is your choice.

The “Gnostic” refers to the fact that we are seekers of gnosis, spiritual knowledge. We understand that we carry this knowledge within ourselves and do not bind ourselves to books written by dead men attempting to tell us how to live. Instead, we look within for our answers. Some Gnostics are Christians and others aren’t. Our church is open to all.

“Assembly” is defined as a group of people gathered together for a common purpose. Our purpose is self-discovery. Our goal is to realize our own enlightenment and to release the knowledge within so that it is available for the use of our conscious minds to guide and lead us.

Sophia, in Gnosticism, is seen as the wife of God. Her name translates as “wisdom”. It is our belief that to discount the male or female aspects of “God” is to create an imbalanced view. We firmly believe in the Divine Feminine and her role as the mother of man.

Even though I will lead the discussions, we are meeting to discuss any relevant issues of interest to those that attend. Do not think these meetings are for me to talk and you to listen. Everyone gets to have their say in the discussion.
